Single Moms Can Soar
As it appeared in the Beaumont Enterprise - November 19, 2017

In March 2007 I established SMORE for Women, a nonprofit association, whose goal is Single Moms-Overjoyed, Rejuvenated and Empowered. Over the last ten years we’ve hosted Days of Blessing offering select moms a day of rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. We hosted overnight retreats at Holy Family Retreat Center, a class on Setting Boundaries and other topics as well as social events. As a Life Coach I work with single moms one-on-one. I was a single mother, divorced and with most of the common troubles and heartaches that being the single head of a household entail. Fortunately I had a college degree, which made a world of difference for us. My goal and passion is to see single moms succeed.
Over the last ten years I’ve met single moms with diverse and varied backgrounds, socio-economic groups and nationalities. I’ve met moms who were:
  • Abused as children
  • Teenage parents
  • Divorced
  • Never married
  • Abused by their husbands
  • Left by their husbands
Though different from one another, they all have one thing in common-the need to support themselves and provide a home for their children. Like other mothers they all love their children dearly and want what is best for them. Those who do not have an employable skill would benefit greatly by having at least an associate’s degree.
Once in a while I meet a single mom who is so impressive she is an inspiration for others. Natausha is one of those moms. She is a brave woman, mother of two daughters and is deeply spiritual. Her broad smile doesn’t reveal the struggles she’s faced. With such horrifying experiences it is amazing that she managed to pull herself out and reach goals that would earn anyone’s respect. She overcame major obstacles from childhood and into young adulthood. She endured child abuse, including sexual molestation; rape and she experienced heartbreaking rejection, not just once in a while but repeatedly. Eventually she came to a faith that turned her life around. From her soon to be available book, A Cry for Help and God Answers, “She began making wise decisions to create a better future for herself and her baby. It would have been easy to give in to a life of negative behavior, but she refused to let anything distract her from the goals she set for herself. She decided to release the pain of her past, focus only on the joy of her freedom and move forward into a better tomorrow.”
Natausha managed to graduate magna cum laude with an Associate’s Degree of Applied Sciences in Accounting Technology from Lamar Institute of Technology. She also received the STAR Award, which is given to select students during Black History Month. She has established her own tax business and is doing well.
Not all women have the ability to complete a degree without a support system. Few have the faith and fortitude Natausha has. Most need assistance, not just financial, but personal encouragement as well.
I admire and respect Natausha for reaching her goal. Just as much I admire and respect her for overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. That is success!

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” –Booker T. Washington
